UNESCO Certificate arrives !

We have received the official UNESCO Certificate designating the Bras d’Or Lake as a World Biosphere Reserve. It is a 13″ X 20″ parchment with the official seal of UNESCO and signed by the Director-General for UNESCO. It has been framed and will be on display throughout the watershed. Here are links to the Nomination Document (321 pages) and supporting maps submitted on June 22, 2010 to the Canadian Commission for UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization . These were approved and submitted on behalf of Canada to the UNESCO Man and the Biosphere office in Paris, France where they were unanimously endorsed.

Mary Harper Nature Preserve

The Bras d’Or Preservation Nature Trust recently announced the designation of the “Mary Harper Nature Preserve” by the provincial government. “Mary Harper was a quiet, tenacious, courageous, and generous woman. At the age of 79, she became the oldest person to sail the Atlantic single-handedly.
